Dan Solberg and Gina Grafos
Scenes
September 10th - 30th
Opening September 10th, 7:00 pm, Artist Talk 7:30 |
Join us for this season's opening exhibition, featuring new work by St. Louis based artists Dan Solberg and Gina Grafos.
In the artists' words:
This exhibition is a collection of recent works that take the concept of the landscape in two different directions that yet retain complimentary aesthetics.
The works by Dan Solberg depict scenes of cinematic realism. The images capture dramatic natural and artificial light through the literal frames of suburban facades. The ambiguity of the authenticity of suburbia is juxtaposed with optical illusion, casting doubt about the genuineness of the photographic processes behind them.
Motivated by Semiotics, Grafos' photographs and modified objects reveal the symbols and signs found in the contemporary landscape. Whether found object or documentation, the reorientation of these symbols questions the veracity of such placement and the spectator's set of codes attached.
Solberg received his BA in art from DePauw University and his MFA from Washington University in St. Louis. Grafos received her BFA from Columbia College in Chicago and her MFA from Washington University in St. Louis.

I have begun documenting places that I sleep that are not my home including hotel suites, computer labs, and the homes of friends and family. By including myself in the frame, I am creating environmental portraits of sorts. I am interested in how these spaces and the objects within them are empty signifiers, while they might influence the way in which a viewer perceives me as an individual, that perception is not completely accurate as the rooms and the majority of the possessions within them are not my own. There is an artificiality to these photographs and the way in which I inhabit them; the rooms are like sets and I could be an anonymous character in an undefined role. This work is an exploration of identity, representation, context and transience.

Jennifer Herrold
I’m a painter/ muralist/ illustrator/ product and graphic designer. My paintings are colorful, sometimes decorative on the surface, but tend to tell a story. The story can be short or long, short leaning towards pattern and being more decorative, long- involving a plot.
I generally do not paint to match the couch, but if it happens to, all the better.

Time, the interaction of the viewer, and the “potential of the moment” are all elements being addressed in this current body of work.
These photographs serve as the documentation of a moment between these figurative sculptures and the surrounding environment. I am most interested in the visual dialogue developed through those individuals passing by.
Each of the figurative sculptures captures an instant of human interaction. These forms are simplified and contain only what is necessary to begin a dialog. The figures frozen in the moment are unaware of the viewer, creating a physical and spatial relationship unique in the public’s domain. Interaction amongst the group creates the possibility for unique interpretations of the event.
The documentation serves to continue the interaction within the gallery, creating a new dialogue for you, the viewer, to interpret.

Rachel Wolfson
Wolfson’s monochromatic series explores the nature of transitional spaces. When something is at its lowest point, and is no longer useful in its intended function, it has the unique potential to transform into something else with a new relevance.
Her work focuses not on what something was or will be, but rather on that moment of flux when the thing is nothing and could become anything. Whether the images in the paintings are common, nostalgic or hopeful, there is implied meaning in their proximity to one another, even as they relate to other pieces. A question is posed as to what the relationships are, and furthermore what they suggest, but the answer is in the interpretation of the viewer.

I paint spaces of opposition that appear as vacant puzzles or forgotten video game levels. The painting’s superficial struggle is simply how to navigate the forms. Dead ends and red herrings, such as scraped paint, flat shapes, or drawn marks provide an elastic return to the surface of the painting. The work is a battleground for pictorial unity. It is a world of reduced information, an incomplete space in continual movement. They come from a childhood of make believe, forts, Nintendo and folklore. |

Petra Nyendick
In both the urban environment and in nature I am intuitively aware of systems. I build my constructions in layers, using both the rigid grid and the organic patterns of nature as inspiration. The combination of the manufactured with the organic results in unexpected configurations. Irregularity and abnormality of form become as important as the organized grid format.
Experimenting with materials that are unfamiliar to me is a thrilling experience. I have always been attracted to tactility and using different materials enables the construction of thick and unusual textures. These surfaces are combinations of the opaque, translucent and transparent; the visible and the hidden. Working in layers establishes an interactive dialogue with the viewer and encourages the use of imagination to complete that which is concealed and indiscernible.
